Megalania are massive monitor lizards that roam the swamps and jungles of Black Marsh, the ashlands of Morrowind, and the arid deserts of Elsweyr. Thanks to their immense size and the heat they retain through gigantothermy, some populations have even adapted to the harsher climate of Skyrim, where they are most often encountered scavenging among the volcanic tundras of Eastmarch.
Though they prefer carrion, Megalania are opportunistic predators. Using their serrated teeth and powerful claws, they can inflict grievous wounds that cause prey to bleed heavily. More dangerously, their bites deliver a venom that slowly weakens the victim, leaving them vulnerable to being finished off. Travelers passing through Megalania territory are advised to carry cure poison potions and to wear heavy or full armor to minimize the risk of envenomation.
Their venom is especially prized by alchemists and assassins alike, valued for its lethality and its rarity outside of their native habitats. As a result, Megalania hunters can command high prices for harvested venom sacs—though few live long enough to profit from such ventures.
