Dimorphodons
Dimorphodons are small but ancient flying reptiles that trace their origins to Morrowind and Black Marsh. They are an old lineage of pterosaurs, regarded by scholars as distant cousins of the infamous Cliff Racers and Cliff Darters. Their resemblance to those pests has led many outlanders—and even the locals of Morrowind—to confuse them with true Cliff Creatures.
For most of Nirn’s history, Dimorphodons were confined to Morrowind and Black Marsh, with only rare reports of individuals straying beyond their homelands. This changed after the Red Year, when the eruption of Red Mountain forced countless species to migrate. Dimorphodons spread throughout Tamriel, and to the surprise of many naturalists, they did not merely survive but thrived, with populations even established in Skyrim.
Behavior
Dimorphodons are small and lightweight, often gathering in large flocks. A lone Dimorphodon poses little threat—easily dispatched with a few strikes. In groups, however, they are highly dangerous, coordinating aerial assaults that allow them to harry and even kill prey as large as a mammoth. They are extremely fast, striking from the air in sudden swoops.
Fortunately for most of Skyrim’s inhabitants, Dimorphodons are primarily piscivores and insectivores, showing little aggression toward people unless approached too closely.
Subspecies
Cave Dimorphodon – Far more aggressive than their kin, these predators will attack anything they can catch. They are most often found in dark caves, where they have been observed in the service of the Falmer as natural scouts, alerting their masters to intruders. How this relationship formed remains unknown.
Tamed Dimorphodons – Some Forsworn and bandits have managed to domesticate wild Dimorphodons, using them as sentries or companions in battle. While not as fearsome as trained hounds, their speed and shrill cries make them effective early-warning creatures.
