Description
Unique Region Name Framework is a SKSE plugin that names the regions of Skyrim at runtime, with no plugin in your load order. You get "Whiterun Hold" instead of "Skyrim" on doors, on the map and in your save names. It comes with the full data of Unique Region Names SE, but without a single cell record being edited, so it cannot conflict with anything.
Same result as Unique Region Names SE. No ESP, no cell edits, no conflict resolution patches.
Requirements
You do not need Unique Region Names SE. Do not run both at the same time — pick one or the other.
How It Works
1 Vanilla Skyrim uses the generic name "Skyrim" for all exterior zones. Older mods like Unique Region Names SE fixed this by modifying over 6,300 cell records, causing severe conflicts with lighting, water, and landscape mods.
2 A simpler approach using Dynamic String Distributor (DSD) was not viable — it can only swap existing text and cannot create the necessary new region records.
3 This SKSE plugin resolves the issue directly in memory. It reads JSON configuration files at startup to dynamically generate new regions and assign them to the correct cells.
4 The plugin actively compensates for the game engine's lazy cell loading and applies the required priority flags to overwrite the vanilla region. The result is accurate region names without a single cell record being overridden — making load order entirely irrelevant and eliminating the need for compatibility patches.
Configuration
Everything is in Data/SKSE/Plugins/UniqueRegionNameFramework.ini.
[General] Enabled = true ; Master switch. [Log] Level = info ; trace, debug, info, warn, error, critical, off. [Diagnostics] SampleCells = 0 ; Dump the regions of N cells at startup. TraceCellLoads = 0 ; Dump regions before and after N cell loads. [Advanced] ReapplyOnCellLoad = true ; Leave this on, see below. RegisterRegions = true ; Leave this on, see below.
The two [Advanced] options are for tracking down problems, not for tuning. Turning ReapplyOnCellLoad off will cause most region names to stop working — the log will warn you.
Compatibility
Built for Skyrim SE / AE / VR.
No plugin conflicts. It overrides no records because it has no records.
Works with any lighting, water, landscape or city overhaul. The cell records it would have fought over are never touched.
Works with Regional Save Names as-is.
Safe to install and to remove mid-save. Nothing is written to your save file.
Remove Unique Region Names SE and its Realistic Water Two, Cutting Room Floor and Missing Encounter Zones patches. They have no purpose anymore.
FAQ
Do I still need Unique Region Names SE?
No — remove it. This plugin builds the same regions itself.
Is this safe to install or remove mid-save?
Yes. Nothing is written to your save file in either direction.
Do I need Regional Save Names?
Only for save file names. Doors and the map work without it.
Can I add my own regions?
Yes. Drop a .json file in Data/SKSE/Plugins/UniqueRegionNames/. That is the whole point of the mod.
