Video note: it's very boring. So just watch the velocity counter in the bottom right
Momentum: Walking Inertia
This mod changes how player movement works by adding a momentum system. Your character's speed builds up gradually when you start moving instead of going full speed instantly. Think Red Dead Redemption 2 or even GTA IV.
How it works
When you press a movement key, your speed starts low and increases over time until you reach full speed. When you stop moving, your speed decreases back down. You can choose between linear acceleration (steady increase) or exponential (slow start, then faster).
Slope effects
Running downhill makes you go faster and builds up bonus momentum. Running uphill slows you down. The steeper the slope, the bigger the effect. On flat ground, your bonus momentum fades away gradually.
If slope boost is enabled, you can exceed normal max speed when going downhill.
Encumbrance
Your carry weight affects how quickly you build up speed. The more you're carrying, the slower your acceleration:
- 51-75% carry weight: 85% acceleration
- 76-100% carry weight: 65% acceleration
- Over-encumbered: 45% acceleration
Stopping inertia
Optional feature that makes you slide to a stop when you let go of movement keys, like you're slipping on ice. Your controls are disabled briefly while you slide. The slide only lasts a fraction of a second at normal speeds.
Tripping
At high speeds on steep downhill slopes, there's a chance you'll trip and fall. Your Agility stat, the slope steepness, and your current speed all affect the chance. You can only trip once every 30 seconds by default. This feature is optional.
Debug display
The mod can show your current velocity on the HUD where the AP counter normally is. Enable this in the MCM if you want to see your exact speed.
Configuration
Everything is configurable through MCM:
- Acceleration and deceleration speeds
- How linear or exponential the curves are
- Slope boost strength and uphill penalty
- Encumbrance penalty amounts
- Stopping inertia decay rate
- Trip chance, cooldown, and minimum slope
- Whether to disable momentum in combat
- Debug velocity display
The mod is ESPless and uses INI files for settings. All settings can be changed in-game through MCM.
Credit
Absolutely not possible without PistolPayback's Walking Inertia mod, which I got permission from him to rework. If you want to know the difference aside from architecture, this mod tweaks the formulas and mainly adds slopes and encumbrance.
