Shalks are large, insectoid creatures native to Morrowind, valued by the Dunmer for their meat, resin, and carapaces. Their resin, in particular, is prized in alchemy and craftwork, while their meat has long been a staple of traditional Dunmer cuisine.
Normally docile, Shalks will retaliate with frightening efficiency when threatened. Their primary defense is a blast of fire-like spittle, a natural attack that makes them highly resistant to flames themselves. Travelers are advised to keep their distance, for even a grazing spray can cause severe burns.
Distribution & Origins
Though firmly associated with Morrowind, Shalks have been sighted beyond their native volcanic ashlands. A persistent tale speaks of a mysterious mage in the Stormfront Peaks, southeast of Riften, who first introduced them to Skyrim. Whatever the truth, a small population now thrives in the region’s rocky valleys.
Their presence on Solstheim is more puzzling. Some accounts claim the Dunmer intentionally brought them as livestock, only for several to escape and establish a feral population. Others whisper of more arcane explanations, though no consensus has ever been reached.
